Exploring the traditional legacy in osteopathic principles
✅ Course description
A unique 8-hour continuing professional development (CPD) course for registered osteopaths with lectures in the morning and professional superVision in the afternoon. The lectures will explore historical, sociocultural, scientific, and clinical perspectives about the legacy of traditional medicine in current osteopathic principles. In the afternoon, registered lecturers from the BMS Team will discuss with participants the relevance of the body-mind-spirit osteopathic tenet in Western clinical scenarios for providing evidence-informed, patient-centered care.
✅ Learning outcomes
At the end of this CPD, participants will be able to:
- Critically appraise the historical context of the development of osteopathic principles.
- Develop cultural competence skills to understand a variety of patients’ sociocultural belief systems towards health, symptoms, disease, and subsequent care.
- Critically appraise evidence-informed models for osteopathic care that are include the spiritual dimension in healthcare.
- Critically appraise the relevance of the body-mind-spirit osteopathic tenet for providing evidence-informed, patient-centered care.

Each lecture will be followed by a Q & A session with the speakers.
- Historical perspectives with Jason Haxton, Director of the Museum of Osteopathic Medicine, Kirksville, MO (USA). Description: To present the historical context of early osteopathy combining Western and traditional sociocultural belief systems, i.e., the interactions between A.T. Still and Native Americans.
- Sociocultural perspectives with Francesca Baroni, Registered osteopath in Italy and researcher. Description: To present the Cynefin framework to help practitioners with the complexity of clinical presentations and different sociocultural belief systems towards health.
- Scientific perspectives with Pr Michiel van Elk, Cognitive Psychology Unit at the Institute of Psychology, Leiden University (The Netherlands). Description: To present current neuroscientific models linking multisensory integration (interoception, proprioception, and exteroception) with spiritual experiences.
- Clinical perspectives with Rafael Zegarra-Parodi, Registered osteopath in Paris and research affiliate, A.T. Still Research Institute, Kirksville, MO (USA). Description: To present current models for patient-centered, evidence-informed osteopathic care that integrate Western or traditional sociocultural belief systems of patients.
Registered lecturers from the BMS Team—Paul Ankri, Raphaël Avanozian, and Damien Hébrard—will discuss with participants the relevance of the body-mind-spirit osteopathic tenet in Western clinical scenarios for providing evidence-informed, patient-centered care.

- The “hands-off” perspective (the therapeutic alliance). Professional superVision with the BMS Team about the clinical relevance of the body-mind-spirit tenet in contemporary osteopathic care.
- Summary of each section by Rafael Zegarra-Parodi followed by a Q & A session.

An 8-hour CPD certificate will be delivered at the end of the course. Language: English only (NO TRANSLATION AVAILABLE). No food or beverages will be provided at Le Grand Rex. This is an on-site event only. Limited places are available. Prise en charge par le FIFPL possible (only for French-registered osteopaths).
